Magellan 4250 - It’s a good unit, but also has some flaws

I thought I’d follow up with my decision and share my experiences thus far.

I had both units, decided against the Garmin and popped open the 4250. This is our family’s first GPS unit and our only other experience was a positive one using Hertz Neverlost.

MAgellan 4250 - Excellent GPS Unit!

I spent a lot of time researching a GPS unit to purchase. I “settled” for the Magellan 4250 because I couldn’t justify the additional $100-200 to purchase a similar Garmin product and I stayed away from TomTom because a retail store rep mentioned that those units were returned pretty frequently.

I took this unit with me to Las Vegas and it got me from point to point without issues. Directions are clear and the interface is pretty straight forward. Entering addresses is quite easy, route calculation is reasonably fast. It has a day/night mode and is quite visible even in direct sunlight. My only complaint with the screen is that the unit is still too bright when in night mode and the brightness is set to the lowest level.

Magellan Maestro 4250 - Great GPS Unit With A Great Price

I bought two of these GPS units in October 08, a new unit for my daughter as a gift and a refurb unit for myself. Both units work great. No major problems. I updated the firmware from Magellan’s web site, it’s free. I also updated the maps. Both units shipped with 07-08 maps. The update is to the latest 08-09 maps, cost is $80 per unit. The traffic indicator works great and is inexpensive $40 for a year of service. With it enabled, the unit will route you around heavy traffic.

Magellan Maestro 4250 - A Must-Have Item

I am not overstating it when I say the Magellan Maestro 4250 is the best purchase I’ve made in the last 16 months. You might ask why?

First, the GPS device works great. I have the introductory subscription to traffic alerts (yes, they do work!) and the device even lets you talk to it so you can be hands-free when driving. My only big complaint is the manual for the device is AWFUL. To get Magellan’s attention when driving just say “Magellan.” It’s very easy to use, tells you street names, and even can let you control you cell phone with a BlueTooth feature.

Second, I’ve used Magellan twice on trips to Hawaii. In Kaui it was like my own personal tour guide, telling me Auto Club-recommended places to see and restaurants to eat at along the way. I wouldn’t have had the patience for reading road maps or guides (and I didn’t have to thanks to my Magellan GPS device). I even used the Magellan Maestro 4250 in Honolulu when I rented a car. I had ordered a rental car with a GPS device, but as often happens they were “out of GPS devices.” I ALWAYS take my Magellan with me when I rent cars because I’ve found 1/3 of the time they’ve rented all the cars with GPS, and I don’t want to be without Magellan.

Magellan Maestro 4250

The Magellan 4250 is a solid GPS. The screen size is ideal with larger screen alternatives providing marginal benefit at best. The screen shows, in addition to the map, my estimated time or arrival, the miles until the next course adjustment, and a little diagram of the next turn. The Magellan directs me to my destination by the most direct path allowing me to choose freeways, avoid freeways, most direct, fastest, etc.
